Those who have already experienced a failed marriage and make the attempt to marry again must consider relational evaluation, change, and clarity in expectations in order for another relationship to be successful. Failure to be deliberate in your choice in partner will likely produce similar outcomes from your previous marriage.
What Remarriage Often Involves
- Blending different perspectives, expectations, and desires in the new relationship.
- Navigating relationships between stepparents, stepchildren, and biological children
- Minimizing and eliminating communication and dynamics with a former spouse
- Old patterns or unresolved pain from a previous marriage resurfacing
- Building trust in a new relationship after a previous one ended
Couples entering remarriage often underestimate how much these additional layers can strain even a strong relationship if they aren't addressed directly.
Why Remarriages Face Unique Challenges
Research consistently shows that remarriages, especially those involving stepchildren, face higher rates of conflict than first marriages — not because the relationship is weaker, but because there are simply more moving parts to manage. Recognizing this upfront, rather than assuming things should just work themselves out, makes a real difference.
How I Approach This Work
My work with couples entering or navigating remarriage focuses on building a strong partnership between the couple first, while developing realistic strategies for blending families, parenting effectively, and addressing any unresolved pain from previous relationships that might otherwise resurface in the new one. It is typically my recommendation that the biological parent provides expectations, correction, and discipline to their own children, while the non-biological parent only provides adult consulting. This means that they do not provide unsolicited advice, and never enter the corrective or disciplinary role.
If you're building a new marriage — with all the added complexity that can bring — I would be glad to help you and your partner build it on solid ground.
